Phenergan Elixir is a treatment that helps to relieve to effects of allergies such as hay fever, pet allergies, dust allergies, and other allergy types. It can also be used as an aid for sleep loss as well as for motion sickness. The active ingredient is promethazine, a first-generation antihistamine. It is sugar-free and orange-flavoured.

Phenergan Elixir is indicated: For short term use:

  • To treat adults with difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • To treat allergic conditions such as hay fever or rashes (like nettle rash or hives)
  • To treat or stop you feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting) such as travel sickness
  • For short term use: as a sedative for children aged 5 years and above

How can the active ingredient promethazine hydrochloride help me?

The active ingredient in Phenergan is promethazine hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine that belongs to a group of medicines known as phenothiazines. When you have an allergic reaction, your body creates a natural substance called histamine. Histamine sends signals around your body that trigger symptoms of allergy, such as a runny nose or watery eyes. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine, which prevents your symptoms so you won't have to tolerate an allergic reaction.

How long does Phenergan make you sleepy?

Promethazine (the active ingredient in Phenergan) will start to make you feel sleepy around 20 minutes after you take it and may work for up to 12 hours. If you're taking it for a cough or cold symptoms, allergies or nausea, your symptoms should start to improve within 20 minutes. The medicine should work for around 4 to 6 hours. Please take note of dosage requirements.

Is Phenergan good for sleep?

Phenergan also works directly on the brain to help you feel more relaxed. Many people find Phenergan helps them when travelling with motion sickness. Phenergan Tablets are used to treat the following conditions: For short term use: to treat adults with difficulty sleeping (insomnia).

How to take Phenergan elixir

For allergies (such as hay fever, rashes and hives) Children 2-5 years: Either a single dose of one to three 5ml spoonfuls OR one 5ml spoonful twice a day. DO NOT give more than three 5ml spoonfuls a day

Children 5-10 years: Either a single dose of one to five 5ml spoonfuls OR one or two 5ml spoonfuls twice a day. DO NOT give more than five 5ml spoonfuls a day

Children over 10 years and adults (including the elderly): Start with two 5ml spoonfuls twice a day. This may be increased to a maximum of four 5ml spoonfuls three times a day

For children over 10 years and adults, Phenergan Tablets may be more convenient

For treatment and prevention of feeling sick or being sick (such as travel sickness)

Children 2-5 years: One 5ml spoonful the night before the journey. This may be repeated after 6-8 hours if necessary.

Children 5-10 years: Two 5ml spoonfuls the night before the journey. This may be repeated after 6-8 hours if necessary.

Children over 10 years and adults (including the elderly): Five 5ml spoonfuls the night before the journey. This may be repeated after 6-8 hours if necessary.

For children over 10 years and adults, Phenergan Tablets may be more convenient.

As a short term paediatric sedative and for short term treatment of insomnia in adults

Children 2-5 years: Three or four 5ml spoonfuls as a single dose at nighttime

Children 5-10 years: Four or five 5ml spoonfuls as a single dose at nighttime

Children over 10 years and adults (including the elderly): Use of Phenergan Tablets is recommended

Active ingredient: Each 5ml of solution contains 5mg of the active substance, promethazine hydrochloride. Other ingredients: hydrogenated glucose syrup (maltitol liquid), orange juice fl avour, caramel (E150), sodium benzoate (E211), sodium sulphite anhydrous (E221), sodium metabisulphite (E223), ascorbic acid (E300), citric acid anhydrous (E330), sodium citrate (E331), acesulphame potassium (E950) and water.

When should Phenergan Elixir not be used?

Phenergan Elixir should not be taken by children under the age of 2. Phenergan Elixir should not be taken if you are breastfeeding or are due to give birth within 2 weeks. If you are pregnant or think you may become pregnant, speak with your doctor before using Phenergan Elixir. Do not use Phenergan syrup if you use depression medication known as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), for example:

  • Isocarboxazid
  • Nardil or phenelzine
  • Moclobemide

Do not use Phenergan Elixir after the bottle has been open for more than a month and always check the expiry date. You may feel drowsy after taking Phenergan Elixir, if this is the case then do not drive or use machinery or tools. Do not drink alcohol while taking Phenergan Elixir, as it can affect how the medicine works. If you notice a side effect when using, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible.
